Port of Long Beach-Lebec EV Lane Testing

Challenge.
In February 2024, a major shipper and carrier were looking to test how to integrate a Class 8 EV truck into a lane thatruns between the Port of Long Beach, CA and Lebec, CA. The truck’s domiciled location at the carrier’s facility, the Port pickup location, and the warehouse destination were all too far in distance to rely solely on the range provided at the initial charging location. Successfully enabling the truck to complete a full turn would require additional DC fast top-off charging at the shipper’s Lebec property.
Solution.
Terawatt teamed up with the shipper and carrier to build out a comprehensive temporary charging solution. After a desktop review of the utility information, existing site drawings, and jurisdiction requirements, we completed a site visit to assess current site conditions, power availability, and electrical equipment needs — and determined that the shipper’s warehouse had enough capacity to install a temporary EV charger and run a month-long daily route pilot. LeveragingTerawatt’s equipment supplier relationships, Terawatt delivered a palletized high-speed charger with all needed equipment to the site in under 4 weeks. Terawatt also deployed its proprietary Charge Management Software (CMS) to provide real-time data on charging activity, performance metrics, and billing information.
Results.
Rapid deployment provided the shipper and carrier with a complete picture — with actual metrics and real-time data —into what a full-scale EV lane would entail, equipping them with the confidence to scale electrification plans.
